Can't Download El Capitan Macbook Air 2011

I have a macbook air Its a 2011 Model. It uses snow leopard 10.6.8. Apple said I can upgrade it to EL Capitan but when i tried to install it using the app store. It said 'Not available in this version' But I have the requirements! Any ideas?

You can't possibly download old software from the App Store. ElCapitan disappered from the App Store over a year ago (2016-9-20). Start a new question and tell exactly how you got this discontinued installer. Otherwise, perhaps you don't have El Capitan.

But when the virtual machine isn't running, macos still gets the full 8GB RAM?
